AI Will Screen Your Baggages At Airports
Airports Authority of India (AAI) has given the green signal to implement smart baggage screening system at top 9 airports in India.
Under the Startup India initiative, AAI conducted ‘Innovate for Airports Programme’ challenge, wherein several interesting ideas for implementing more security at airports were selected.
Out of 350 startup ideas, 8 were selected for implementation at the airports.
Smart baggage screening is one of them.
Called Baggage AI, this technology will be implemented at x-ray screening machines, and will automatically detect dangerous objects kept in the baggage.
This will complement the existing system, wherein a security guard manually screens the baggage via x-ray machines.
Baggage AI, which will be implemented across 9 airports has been developed by Dimensionless Technologies.
No Airlines From India In Top Safest Airports
Germany based Jet Airliner Crash Data Evaluation Center (JACDEC) has revealed that none of the airlines from India have been able to get featured in the top 10 safest airlines list.
Australia’s state carrier Qantas Airline has been declared as world’s safest airlines, followed by Air New Zealand and Taiwanese airlines: Eva Airlines, which is at #3.
UAE based Etihad Airlines is 4th safest airlines in the world, whereas Qatar Airlines is at #5, Singapore Airlines at #6, Emirates Airlines at #7, Alaska Airlines at #8, Cathay PAcific at #9 and Virgin Australia at #10.
2019 has been declared as one of the safest years for airlines, with 293 fatalities related with airline accidents, down from 559 in 2018.

“Walmart remains committed to growing its B2B Cash & Carry business in India. We opened 6 new Best Price modern wholesale stores, 1 Fulfilment Center and our sales grew 22% in 2019.
We have recently made significant investments to serve our members better and will continue to do so. This includes investments in our brick and mortar stores as well as e-commerce. Our members are increasingly becoming omni-channel shoppers. We are thus investing heavily in technology and have a healthy pipeline of Best Price stores. This will provide our members a true omni-channel and convenient shopping experience in the future.
We are also looking for ways to operate more efficiently, which requires us to review our corporate structure to ensure that we are organized in the right way. As part of this review, we have let go 56 of our associates across levels at the corporate office. All of the 56 impacted associates (8 in the senior management and 48 in the middle/ lower management) have been offered enhanced severance benefits and outplacement services to support their transition. A report appearing in the section of the Press speculating second round of layoffs in April is baseless and incorrect. ”

Reeling under heavy losses, Walmart India, owner of Flipkart has triggered a massive layoff exercise across their top management layer.
Besides, they will shutdown their Mumbai warehouse, which is their biggest in India.

Walmart India Layoffs Begin
In a townhall meeting, Walmart has announced massive layoffs, across their top management layer.
Several Vice presidents across sourcing, agri-business and the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) divisions have been fired.
As per reports, 30% of their top executives from Gurgaon have been fired in this layoff round. Entire real estate sales team for hunting and finalizing new store locations have been fired as well.
Overall, more than 100 top level executives have been given pink slips, in what is described as Walmart’s one of the biggest layoff exercise in India.
Mumbai fulfillment center, which is their biggest in India, will also be shut down.
Walmart’s Response: Corporate Restructuring
Walmart India has described this as ‘corporate restructuring’ exercise, as they said in a statement: “We are always looking for ways to operate more effectively to serve our members. This requires us to review our corporate structure to ensure that we are organised in the right way to best meet the needs of our members,”
As per Walmart, all the fired executives will be given appropriate severance packages and assistance in getting new jobs.
As per some insiders, this is only the first round of layoffs, and in April, more employees will be fired.
Why Walmart Is Firing Employees in India?
Walmart, which entered India almost 10 years back, is reeling under severe losses.
As per some reports, Walmart India has almost given up on their brick-and-mortar cash-and-carry business, which was its focus in the last 10 years.
They have accumulated total losses of Rs 2181 crore till now, and now, the US-headquartered retail behemoth wants to stop this leak.
In FY2019, against revenues of Rs 4095 crore, Walmart India’s Best Prices Store reported losses of Rs 172 crore, which was R 91 crore a year back, against revenues of Rs 3686 crore.
On reports on quitting their brick and mortar cash and carry business, Walmart said, “Walmart remains deeply committed to growing its cash-and-carry business in India and is making deep investment in technology to cater to its members’ need through brick-and-mortar and ecommerce.”
What Next?
As per some retail observers, Walmart India can now consolidate their Best Prices store business with Flipkart, and scale down their cash and carry business.
There has been no confirmation or denial regarding this development.

By opting this option, the specific amount will be deducted automatically from the UPI linked bank account, and the user will not be required to authenticate that transaction repeatedly.
In August last year, Govt had approved recurring payments for debit cards, and that too was done for transactions till Rs 2000.

The Consul General said, “We already issue tatkal passports in 24 hours. We are going one step beyond that. We are going to issue tatkal passport on the same day if it is applied for before 12 noon. By evening, we can issue the tatkal passport.”

Govt Will Investigate Deep Discounts Given By Amazon, Flipkart On Smartphones: Are Competition Rules Being Abused Here?
On Monday, India’s antitrust body has ordered an investigation into alleged competition law violations by e-commerce giants Amazon.com Inc and Walmart owned Flipkart.
How Did This Happen?
As per the reports, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) ordered an investigation into alleged violations of competition law by India’s largest online retailers Amazon and Flipkart.
According to CCI, exclusive arrangements between mobile phone brands and e-commerce platforms, as well as allegations of e-commerce companies giving preferential treatment to certain sellers “merits an investigation”.
What Do These Allegations Say?
This investigation seems to be a setback for Amazon and Walmart’s Flipkart, which Indian brick-and-mortar traders allege violate the country’s foreign investment rules.
While both the e-commerce giants deny those allegations.
The order for the probe comes against the backdrop of trader communities across the country levelling several allegations of violations of FDI in e-commerce, along with the ones mentioned above against the online giants as per the report.
Also the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), which is spearheading a nationwide stir against the e-commerce giants called the order by CCI “historic”.
The order said “The Commission is of the opinion that there exists a prima facie case which requires an investigation,”.
What Does The Amazon And Flipkart Say About TheseAllegations?
The SVP & chief corporate affairs officer at Flipkart Group said “We are currently reviewing the document. The Flipkart group is fully compliant with all applicable laws and FDI regulations”.
The investigation order comes amidst when in a week Amazon chief Jeff Bezos is expected to visit India for a company event and potential meetings with government officials.
While an Amazon India spokesperson said “We welcome the opportunity to address allegations made about Amazon; we are confident in our compliance, and will cooperate fully with CCI,”.
What To Expect Next?
Moreover, the CCI has asked the Director General to investigate the alleged predatory practices of Amazon and Flipkart after being approached by the Delhi Vyapar Mahasangh, a group representing small- and medium-sized businesses.
They alleged that several of Amazon and Flipkart’s preferred sellers were affiliated with or controlled by the companies themselves, either directly or indirectly.
The Director General has 60 days to submit the report in this regard.
The CCI has given 11-page order in which they want its investigations arm to probe the e-commerce companies’ discounting practices as well as their relationship with such sellers.
The investigation is the latest setback for Amazon and Walmart’s Flipkart, which Indian brick-and-mortar traders allege violate the country’s foreign investment rules and burn billions of dollars to offer steep discounts that hurt smaller traders.

For instance, JioFiber users can get only 1250 GB of data for Rs 2499, which is offered at 500 Mbps speed. For Airtel broadband users, they need to pay Rs 1499 for 500GB of data in a month, at upto 300Mbps speed.
Ofcourse, the content provided by Jio and Airtel for broadband users cannot be matched by BSNL as of now.
Where Will This Plan Be Available?
As per reports coming in, this new BSNL broadband plan is only available in Chennai and Telangana circles as of now, but is expected to be soon rolled out pan-India.
Note here, that this a promotional ofer, only available for next 90 days.
It is not clear if the features of the plan will expire after 90 days, or the availability of this new plan will expire after 90 days.

Social Media Posting Is A Fundamental Right; Govt Can’t Stop You From Posting On Facebook, Twitter
In a landmark judgment, High Court Judge has declared that social media posting is a fundamental right of every Indian citizen.
Police, and Govt officials cannot stop and prevent any Indian citizen from posting and sharing their views on social media such as Facebook, Twitter and others.
This verdict was announced in an interesting case which happened in Tripura.
Tripura Political Activist Arrested Over Social Media Posts
Few days back, Congress youth activist Arindam Bhattacharjee from Tripura posted some anti-Govt posts and comments, related to the ongoing Citizen Amendment Act protests.
In his Facebook post, he had objected to BJP led Govt. asking citizens to give a miss call to a number, to show support for CAA.
In this Facebook post, he said, “If you call 8866288662, all your data would go to hackers,”
This irked BJP related online groups and they filed a case against Arindam with police.
In response, police him, and allegedly harassed him as wel.
The case reached Tripura High court.
Tripura High Court: Social Media Posting Is a Fundamenta Right
Responding to the plea by Arindam and his lawyers, Chief Justice Akil Kureshi from Tripura High court said that social media posting is a fundamental right of every Indian citizen.
As a result, police has removed Sections 120(B) and 153(A) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) from the FIR which was lodged against Arindam, and quashed the case.

This is seen by several activists, as a landmark verdict, which will have far reaching consequences.

While the busy front fascia is also fitted with round shaped fog lamps and wide air intakes and the rear of the Kia QYi comprises horizontal LED tail lamps.
Further features include raked windshield, 16-inch alloy wheels and tall pillars.
Although, the interior will be different from the Venue but expect the equipment list to be equally packed as its cousin with less use of physical buttons.

Paytm Will Charge 1.75% For Adding Money Via Credit Card; 5% Charge For Sending Money To Bank A/c From Wallet!
One of the leading online payment systems, Paytm, has now released a list of charges that will be applicable for all transactions that you do to add money to your Paytm wallet.
Recently, Paytm announced that there will be additional charges if you add more than Rs. 10,000 to your Paytm wallet using a credit card.

Paytm’s New Charges For Using Credit Card
Paytm has announced that any transactions that are less than the amount of Rs. 10,000 will have no charges. If there are any transactions that are more than Rs. 10,000, you will be charged an extra fee of 1.75% and additional GST as well.
If the total money you add to your Paytm wallet with a credit card, including current transaction, is more than Rs. 10,000, then the entire amount will be charged with 1.75% and GST too. For example, if the total amount you add is Rs. 12000, the total amount that would be deducted from your bank account is Rs. 12,240, but the amount added to your wallet will be Rs. 12,000 only. All the subsequent transactions will be charged accordingly.
How These New Charges Will Apply?
If you carry out multiple transactions that are of a cumulative amount that is more than Rs. 10,000, then your first few transactions will not be charged. For example, if the first transaction is of Rs. 1000, the second one is of Rs. 2000, then neither of them will be chargeable. If you add Rs. 7001 to your Paytm wallet, the whole amount will be charged. All the subsequent amounts will be charged too.
You can avoid these charges if they are added by using a debit card and UPI and any other method other than a credit card. If you are purchasing anything at merchant site and transferring money Paytm to Paytm, no charges will be applicable.
If you are transferring money from Paytm wallet to Paytm Payments Bank or any other bank account, you will be charged with 5%.
Oyo Rooms Will Fire 1000 Employees In India As Part Of 2020 Growth Plan; Founder Ritesh Agarwal Apologises
Very recently, there was news about Oyo’s plans of firing 3000 employees in India and China. And now, Ritesh Agrawal, the founder and CEO of Oyo Homes & Hotels has penned a letter that says to fire 1000 employees from India.
This, apparently, is a plan for restructuring and reorganizing the firm for a boosted efficiency in the organization.

Oyo Rooms Will Terminate 1000 Employees: Confirmed
Oyo’s founder and CEO, Ritesh Agrawal, is now on the way to fire 1000 employees for restructuring and reorganization of the teams in the OYO firms throughout India so that there is no redundancy in the businesses and functions.
In the internal letter to the employees of Oyo in India and South Asia, Agrawal says, “Every Oyopreneur is important to Oyo and ensuring their well-being both during and after their tenure is our number one priority. I want to thank them for their efforts and apologize for the impact this is causing.”

The letter also says, “I have no hesitation in admitting that growing at the pace at which OYO has in the past few years, we sometimes went ahead of ourselves and pressure-tested our organisation at multiple levels. This year, we are taking steps to address this.”
However, the mail does not specify the exact number of people that will be fired, but sources closely involved in this have estimated the number to be more than 1000 and the reason behind this is ‘right-sizing’.
In the mail, Agrawal states that it hasnt been easy to ask his colleagues to look for other careers outside OYO.
OYO’s strategic objectives are sustainable growth, operational and customer excellence, profitability, and training and governance. As per Agrawal, this causes some roles in the organization have become of no use. He also says that OYO will be taking all efforts to make sure that the ‘outgoing employees’ will get all the help that is needed to help them get through this.
