Oyo Rooms Churns Out Rs 6800 Cr Revenues In 2019; Hosts 18 Crore Guests Globally, Gross Margin Increase By 4.1%

Indian hospitality startup OYO Hotels and Homes, the world’s leading hospitality chain has announced its financial results for FY 2019 (April 2018 to March 2019).  According to the reported audited financials, Oyo’s consolidated revenue stands at  USD 951 million which is 4.5X YoY higher from FY2018 when the company reported a revenue of USD 211 million.

Oyo’s Consistent Growth

Oyo has been into the business since only 6 years now and the feat it has already established is appreciable. The company’s business across markets today is seen to evolve through three key growth stages:

  1. When operations start in the new markets, the focus of the company is mainly on scale and presence.
  2. On achieving scale and presence, the focus is on creating a strong brand resonance and ensuring improved gross margin, for the value proposition brought in, while continuing to invest in accretive growth.
  3. Finally, the focus of the company is to maintain strong brand preference along with ensuring to have a clear path to profitability, enabled by accretive growth, operational excellence, and strong gross margin.

Speaking of this, the business operations in India contributed to nearly 63.5% or USD 604 million of this consolidated figure as the business clocked a 2.9X (y-o-y) growth, in FY 19.

Nearly 36.5% or USD 348 million was contributed by the company’s operations outside India, primarily China, signifying its strong commitment towards building a sustainable global business at scale with improved operating efficiencies.

Some Highlights From Oyo’s Financial Numbers

The company reported an increase in both daily guest check-ins across its network as well as an increase in hotels and asset owners across the world. With over 43,000 asset partners, OYO hosted over 180 million guests from 120+ nationalities between January – December 2019.

Oyo also reduced losses from 24% to 14% of revenue in FY19 to USD 83 million, in mature markets like India. In 2019, OYO also continued to build a loyal guest base, with over 90% revenue coming from repeat and organic user base with repeat alone contributing to 73% of revenues.

Since China and other international markets were in development and investment mode during that time, they contributed to 75% of the losses for FY19.

These markets constituted 36.5% of the global revenues. While consistently improving operating economics in mature markets like India where it’s already seeing an improvement in gross margins, the company is determined to bring in the same fiscal discipline in emerging markets in the coming financial year.

The company’s gross margin in India increased from 10.6% in FY18 to 14.7% in FY19 indicating the strength of its business model and a positive correlation between market share and economics.

  • The OYO app is now among Top 3 Hotel booking apps globally with over 2.3 million downloads till October 2019 which has now increased to 10 million+ downloads.

Kia’s Sorento SUV 1st Images Are Out: This Is How Sorento Looks, Feels (Features, Power, Mileage & Our Opinion)

Kia's Sorento SUV 1st Images Are Out: This Is How It Looks, Feels (Features, Power, Mileage & Our Opinion)
Kia’s Sorento SUV 1st Images Are Out: This Is How It Looks, Feels (Features, Power, Mileage & Our Opinion)

South Korean auto major Kia Motors Corporation revealed the first official image of the fourth generation Sorento SUV car yesterday, at the 2020 Geneva International Motor Show.

As the automaker claims, the new generation SUV is based on the concept of refined boldness. It also claims that the SUV is based on a new platform and it appears more stylish and incorporates sharper lines and uninterrupted surfaces.

The Looks Of Kia Sorento

The new generation Sorento SUV’s redefined design incorporates sharper lines and uninterrupted surfaces, making it noticeable more sculpted than its more round-edged predecessor. It comes with more contemporary geometric details and more swept-back, elongated proportions.

Kia Sorento first look

Sorento adopts a bolder appearance with the latest interpretation of the corporate “tiger nose” grille that nicely blends with the smart-looking LED headlights. According to Kia, the hood is now longer than before and the A-pillar sits 30 millimeters (1.2 inches) further back from the front axle.

The headlamps themselves feature a new ‘tiger eye’ LED daytime running light, adding extra focus to the design by depicting the intense impression of the lines around a tiger’s eyes.

Kia Sorento SUV: The Interiors

Inside the cabin, it gets a fresh design with metallic trims, leather upholstery and embossed wood-effect surfaces. It comes with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a new 12.3-inch high-resolution digital instrument cluster. Kia claims that the new Sorento is the most tech-enabled vehicle of the company.

Interiors of Kia Soreto

Both the front and rear overhangs have been reduced, and we’re noticing decorative metallic trim pieces adorning the front fenders and doors, as well as the C-pillar. Split vertical taillights represent a departure from the wide rear clusters of the previous model.

The rotary dial for the gear shifter is noticeable in the adjacent images, as is a smaller dial to select the drive modes. We’re glad to see there are separate buttons for the climate controls as it can be a bit cumbersome to use the touchscreen to adjust the temperature and ventilation using the big display while on the go.

The cabin introduces a sophisticated next-generation design. Blending metallic trims, leather upholstery and embossed wood-effect surfaces, the interior also subtly integrates other technologies to enhance connectivity, driver assistance and infotainment.

Interiors of Kia Soreto

The Sorento sits at the heart of Kia’s reinvigorated global SUV line-up, which also includes the Seltos, Stonic, Sportage, and Telluride. The new model is the result of a collaborative effort between all three studios within Kia’s global design network, in Korea, Europe and North America.

Kia Motors is likely to bring the Sorento SUV in Indian market in near future. The automaker sells the Seltos SUV here and recently introduced Carnival MPV as well.

Train With Ramayana-Themed Interiors, Bhajans Launching Soon; India’s 3rd Private Train Launched

Gods and Goddesses are a big part of Indians as well as the Indian Infrastructure!

The Indian Railways next edition of Ramayan Express is all set to launch a Ramayana-themed interiored train which will take the pilgrims to all the destinations associated with Lord Rama, said an official on February 14.

Meanwhile, Lord Shiva has a seat reserved for Him for the first time ever on the Kashi Mahakal Express that links three Jyotirlingas in two states which was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday February 16 from Varanasi and will start operating from February 20.

A Devotional Train Experience!

A special train called the ‘Shri Ramayana Express’, with a capacity of 800 passengers, started its service from November 14, 2019 which carried the pilgrims to all major locations of the mythological character.

The Shri Ramayana Express covered important destinations of the Ramayana circuit such as Nandigram, Sitamarhi, Janakpur, Varanasi, Prayag, Shringverpur, Chitrakoot, Nasik, Hampi, Ayodhya and Rameshwaram.

The next edition of Ramayana Express will have Ramayana themed interiors and bhajans playing on board. An official said, It said to give the passengers  the feel of being on a temple on wheels.

Railway Board Chairman V K Yadav said, “The new train is likely to be launched after March 10, 2020 and its annual schedule will be released in the coming week.”

Yadav said in a press briefing, “The train will originate from different locations — north, south, east and west — so that people from across the country can avail its services. The exterior and the interior of the train will be Ramayana-themed. We can have bhajans playing on board. IRCTC is planning the schedule and packages, and we are hoping to run the train after Holi.”

The itinerary of the new Ramayana train is yet to be unveiled.

A Reserved Seat for Lord Shiva!

Northern Railway spokesperson Deepak Kumar told PTI, Seat number 64 in coach B5 of Kashi Mahakal Express was reserved and left vacant for Lord Shiva. The Railways authorities are pondering if they should make a reserved seat for the “Bhole Baba” a permanent feature of the train.

Indian Railways launched its third IRCTC-operated service, the PSU’s third corporate train, from Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi to Indore in Madhya Pradesh and has named it Kashi Mahakal Express. The train connects three Jyotirlingas; Omkareshwar near Indore, Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain and Kashi Vishwanath in Varanasi. The train will cover 1,131 km between Varanasi and Indore via Lucknow and a distance of 1,102 km between Varanasi and Indore via Prayagraj (Allahabad) in approximately 19 hours.

Kumar added saying, “It’s for the first time that a seat has been reserved and left vacant for the deity Lord Shiva. Even a temple has been drawn on the seat to make people aware that the seat is reserved for the Lord Mahakal in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain.”

Some of the new features of the fully 3-AC service that will run thrice a week between Varanasi and Indore will be light devotional music, two dedicated private guards in every coach and only vegetarian meals.

Indian Railways Will Not Stop Free WiFi Across 5600 Railways Stations, But Google Quits The Program

Indian Railways Will Not Stop Free WiFi Across 5600 Railways Stations, But Google Quits The Program
Indian Railways Will Not Stop Free WiFi Across 5600 Railways Stations, But Google Quits The Program

Yesterday, Google announced that they will quit the project called ‘Station’, wherein free WiFi was provided at railway stations across India.

This caused a sort of panic among Indian Railways passengers, who had been using free WiFi at almost all the major railway stations.

Now Indian Railways owned RailTel has clarified that despite Google quitting the project, they will continue to provide free WiFi across 5600 railway stations.

This is a big relief for rail passengers.

Google: We Quit Free WiFi Program At Railway Stations

Yesterday, Google announced that they will now stop providing free WiFi at railway stations, and they will quit the project by 2020 end.

Caesar Sengupta, VP – Payments and Next Billion Users, Google in a blog post said, “Therefore, we’ve made the decision to gradually wind down the Station program globally, through 2020. We are working with our partners to transition existing sites so they can remain useful resources for the community.”

As per Google, mobile data rates in India are right now one of the cheapest in India, and more than 10 GB of data is consumed by an Indian user, every month.

Hence, it doesnt make sense for them to continue in the ‘Station’ project, which they started in 2018. They had a goal to cover 400 stations, and they achieved that goal in 2018 itself.

Indian Railways: We Will Continue To Provide Free WiFi Across 5600 Stations

Later in the day, Indian Railways owned RailTel, which provides the broadband backbone to the Station project across railway stations, clarified that they will continue to provide free WiFi across the nation.

Infact, all 5600 railway stations where Station program is active, will continue to receive free WiFi, despite Google quitting the program.

RailTel has informed that the contract with Google for providing free WiFi was applicable only for 415 stations of A1, A and C categories only.

RailTel said, “In this partnership Google provided the RAN and technology support and RailTel provided the physical infrastructure and internet bandwidth (ISP).”

RailTel, on their own has provided free WiFi across 5190 railway stations, of B, C, D categories.

Since Google’s contract with RailTel is expiring in 2020, they will look for other tech providers, and continue the free WiFi program.

The statement said, “We have roped in a number of partners along the journey and currently RailTel is providing free WiFi at 5600 stations across the country. We entered into a five-year contract with Google for supporting us with setting up WiFi at 415 stations only and the contract is going to expire soon.”

So, no need to worry for railways passengers, because they will continue to get free WiFi as per the promise, across 5600 railway stations.

No Student Will Ever ‘Fail’ In CBSE 10th, 12th Exam; 5 Lakh Students Will Get Digital Marksheets!

Central Board of Secondary Education or CBSE has announced some major reforms, when it comes to Board Exams for class 10th and 12th across India.

This year onwards, no student will ever ‘fail’ in the exam.

And, around 5 lakh students in Maharashtra will now receive digital marksheets, which means that their document will never be lost.

Find out how!

CBSE Will Remove ‘Failed’ From Marksheets

Starting this year, CBSE has decided to remove the word ‘failed’ and ‘compartmental’ from the marksheets of Class 10th and 12th students.

This means that no student will ever fail in these exams.

CBSE has emphasized that a single examination cannot determine the fate of any student.

Controller Sanyam Bharadwaj said, “A single examination cannot decide the fate of a student and no one should be declared ‘failed’ as it has a negative impact on mental health and may lead to depression,”

Now, the question is, which words will be used for students, who actually fail to get the passing marks?

As per CBSE officials, a new committee will be formed, which will decide on the appropriate words to use in the marksheets for such students.

This year, total of 30.96 lakh students will be appearing for the Class 10th and 12th board examinations.

5.4 Lakh Students Will Get Digital Marksheets

Meanwhile in Maharashtra, the Maharashtra State Education Board has announced that all 5.4 lakh students appearing in Board exams will get digital mark sheets.

These digital mark sheets will be stored in the students’ DigiLocker app, which means that they cannot lose them, ever.

DigiLocker is a Cloud based app, launched by Govt of India to store documents of all types. Whenever a requirement arises, the users can open up DigiLocker, and access the document, take a printout and more.

Shakuntala Kale, chairman, MSBSHE, said, “We have digitised records of mark list from 1990 onwards until 2019. The DigiLocker has 3.47.21.294 HSC records and 5,29,55,727 SSC records for verification till date.”

We will keep you updated, as more details come in.

Visa Will Kill OTP For ‘Routine’ Digital Payments; Only Risk-Based Prompt Will Work

Visa Will Kill OTP For 'Routine' Digital Payments; Only Risk-Based Prompt Will Work
Visa Will Kill OTP For ‘Routine’ Digital Payments; Only Risk-Based Prompt Will Work

In the recent news, the global card network provider Visa is looking forward to phase out the two-factor authentication process (2FA) for digital payments in India. They instead aim to replace it with a risk-based prompt, where transactions deemed unusual or risky by banks would be vetted through an OTP check.

Phasing Out the 2FA Process

According to Visa, in order to bring the system of digital payments in India in line with the ‘global best practices’, the routine card transactions could instead have a ‘risk-based prompt’ system and the risks could be for those transactions deemed such by banks.

Joe Cunningham, Head – Risk, Asia Pacific, Visa believes that the company thinks using two-factor in a risk-based manner is better and will give customers a seamless experience.

Cunningham said the new system would encourage adoption of digital payments and help the industry’s growth, which is mostly powered by the e-commerce sector. This could possibly give the consumers a wonderful experience, as some friction needs to be removed.

What is 2FA & How Do They Plan to Disintegrate this Step?

Typically, transactions through debit and credit cards on these platforms are authenticated through two security layer process known as the 2FA.

Under this two-factor authentication, a customer has to first fill in the debit or credit card number, date of card expiry, name and the CVV number, and then verify the transaction via a mobile or email OTP to finish, which Visa feels is not necessary for all transactions as most of them are “routine.”

Hence, the new proposed process is a risk based monitoring of transactions that would eliminate OTPs for routine transactions, i.e., the ones involving low risk and low value from a known IP address to be determined by a data vetting standard, called EMV 3D secure. The company has already implemented this in Singapore and Australia.

The financial services provider plans to hold discussions with Indian regulators and its partner banks on strategies to relax the 2FA norms over time, to bring it in line with global best practices.

Cunningham also added that transactions should be allowed to flow more fluidly and the adoption of digital payments and ecommerce should be encouraged only in cases where Visa’s clients (banks) deem these transactions to be a prior risk then a prompt is required for an extra factor authentication.

Govt Says Aadhaar Is Not Proof Of Citizenship; Issues Notice To 127 People Over Aadhaar Authenticity

Govt Says Aadhaar Is Not Proof Of Citizenship; Issues Notice To 127 People Over Aadhaar Card Authenticity
Govt Says Aadhaar Is Not Proof Of Citizenship; Issues Notice To 127 People Over Aadhaar Card Authenticity

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has stated that Aadhar card will not be accepted as a document for citizenship.

Meanwhile, UIDAI has asked at least 127 people in Hyderabad to prove their Indian citizenship.

Read to find out more…

Aadhar Not a Valid Citizenship Verification Document!

According to UIDAI, Aadhaar is not a document of citizenship and UIDAI has been mandated under the Aadhaar Act to ascertain residency of a person in India for 182 days prior to applying for Aadhaar.

Also, the Supreme Court of India in its landmark decision has directed UIDAI not to issue Aadhaar to illegal immigrants.

Document Verification in Hyderabad!

The letter sent by UIDAI, an agency which issues Aadhar cards, asking about 127 people of Hyderabad to prove their Indian citizenship went viral on social media . On February 18, 2020, Sattar Khan, a rickshaw driver was sent a notice asking him to appear before a UIDAI official on February 20. He was asked to come ‘with all necessary documents in original to prove all his claims of Indian citizenship.’

The notice also states a ‘complaint/objection’ against Khan’s enrollment, without naming the person who raised it.

The Notice served under Rule 30 (Chapter VI) of Aadhar (Enrollment and Update) Regulations, 2016 said, “If you are not an Indian National, prove that you have entered the territory of India legally and your stay is valid.”

The UIDAI also stated, “ In the said notice/s, the residents in Hyderabad, 127 in number, were asked to appear before the Deputy Director on 20th February, 2020 for a personal hearing. Since it may take them more time to collect their original documents that they had submitted for obtaining Aadhar, as informed by the state police, the UIDAI has postponed the hearing to May, 2020.”

In the notice, UIDAI has warned the people that if they don’t verify their enrollment documents in persons their Aadhar cards will be cancelled.

The agency said, “As per the Aadhaar Act, such Aadhaar numbers are liable to be cancelled. Therefore, the RO Hyderabad has sent notices to them to appear in person and to substantiate their claims for getting an Aadhaar number.”

UIDAI Says Process Has Nothing To Do With Citizenship!

After the notice went viral, the UIDAI supported its actions saying that the Telangana police has informed its Hyderabad police that 127 people from Hyderabad have obtained Aadhar card on ‘false pretences’ and were illegal immigrants.

UIDAI clarified that, “ These reports are not presented in the correct perspective and Aadhaar has got nothing to do with the citizenship issue as such.”

UIDAI claims, “After their replies are received & examined; if it is found and proved that if any of them has obtained Aadhaar by submitting false documents or through false pretences, then their Aadhaar is liable to be cancelled or suspended depending on the severity of the transgression. Severe errors like forged documents, etc., will lead to appropriate actions, including suspending /cancelling the Aadhaar. These notices have nothing to do with citizenship and cancellation of the Aadhaar number is in no way related to the nationality of any resident.”

This development is coming at the time of country-wide protests against recently amended citizenship law and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC).

India Beats France, UK To Become World’s 5th Largest Economy; But GDP Growth Weakens

According to reports, India emerged as the world’s fifth largest economy by overtaking the UK and France in 2019.

India is developing into an open-market economy from its previous autarkic policies, according to a report by World Population Review.

The US-based World Population Review is an independent organisation without any political relations.

Read to find out more…

Indian Economy moving at a Fast Pace!

The report said, “India’s economy is the fifth largest in the world with a GDP of USD 2.94 trillion, overtaking the UK and France in 2019 to take the fifth spot.”

The UK economy amounts to USD 2.83 trillion followed by France with USD 2.71 trillion.

The report additionally stated that in purchasing power parity (PPP) terms, India’s GDP (PPP) is USD 10.51 trillion, exceeding that of Japan and Germany. India’s GDP per capita is USD 2,170 (for comparison, the US is USD 62,794) due to the country’s much higher population.

However, India’s real GDP growth has been dropping down for the last  three consecutive years from 7.5% to 5%.

Will the US declaring India as a developed nation affect India’s export which in turn result in a declining economy for the year 2020?

The Indian government is targeting a total GDP of $5 trillion by the year 2024.

The Reasons for Boom in Indian Economy!

India’s economic liberalisation began in the early 1990s and included industrial deregulation, reduced control on foreign trade and investment, and privatisation of state-owned enterprises, as observed by the report. “These measures have helped India accelerate economic growth,” the report stated.

India’s service sector is the fastest-growing sector in the world accounting for 60% of the economy and 28% of employment. Manufacturing and agriculture are two other noteworthy and prominent sectors of the economy.

Aon, a leading human resource and consulting firm conducted a comprehensive study across India and analysed data of more than 1,000 firms from over 20 sectors. The survey it has conducted reflects the economic environment in the country.

It has been found out that India’s economy grew at a six-year low of 4.5% in the September quarter.

  • In December, the RBI slashed the economy growth outlook for 2019-20 from 6.1% earlier to 5%.
  • The Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy reported a 9.7% urban unemployment rate in January 2020 amid reports that companies have reduced their headcount in 2019-20.
  • The attrition rate among Indian employees bumped up a bit from 15.8% in 2018 to 16.1% in 2019.
  • The economic growth of a country has a direct bearing on salary growth.
  • Before 2011, salary growth was in the range of 12-15%. However, in the last few years, it is showing high single-digit growth.

Sector-wise Growth

  • Startups, e-commerce platforms and professional services are expected to offer an average hike of 10%.
  • Pharmaceuticals and IT companies will offer 9.9% and 9.6%, respectively.
  • The logistics and transport sector with a projected pay hike of 7.6%.
  • Hospitality and infrastructure sector projected a pay hike of 8.2% and 8.3% respectively.
  • The automotive industry will see the biggest drop—from 10.1% in 2018 to 8.3% in 2020, the survey showed.

Companies in India gave an average pay increase of 9.3% during 2019, reflecting a slowdown in the economy compared to 2018. The projection for 2020 is down by 20 basis points to 9.1%.

Yet, India Inc. will offer a better pay hike than its Asian peers, said Aon. Chinese companies are expected to offer a 6.3% hike, the Philippines 5.8%, Malaysia 5.3%, Singapore 3.8%, Australia 3.1% and Japan 2.4%.

Despite economic challenges in 2019, organizations in India are taking a positive view. Pay increases in India continue to be the highest in the region. A big reason for India’s higher salary increase, as compared to other growing economies, is the high inflation rate and the war for key talent and niche skills
