How Are Things In China?
The trade association Nasscom has said member companies across the sector are operating with almost 80% attendance.
Basically, the lockdown in China which began late January and lasted till last week saw the technology industry taking a hit with the Asian country being a hub for telecom and well as electronics manufacturing.
Not only that, the Indian businesses with a presence in China now see green shoots as operations return to normalcy.
The senior director, Global Trade Development, Nasscom, Gagan Sabharwal said “As per the information available to us from our member companies, most of the China services sector is now back in office with 80% attendance. Albeit with physical distancing norm and with automatic temperature checks at entry to offices, frequent use of sanitizers, staggered breaks for lunch, only pantries that are licensed can offer food, no makeshift pantries allowed, etc,”.
Further he said there are companies who still prefer to carry out tasks that can be handled from home and this general trend will continue for some time.
What About Other Companies?
Another company, Data networks integrator Sterlite Technologies Limited (STL) said, while its China unit is operational and is providing fibre for global demands, the current India demand is still being managed from the inventory in India under the essential services delivery.
The Group CEO, STL, Anand Agarwal said,“(STL’s) China unit is operational and providing fibre for global demands as well as China demand – the unit is gradually coming back to pre-covid level utilisations and has orders for deliveries,”.
How Does Lockdown Affect The IT Sector?
According to analysts’ opinion, the revenues of IT firms could be impacted in the first six months of FY21 because of covid-19.
Following the early lockdown in China, global IT companies like Accenture had already revised their guidance for the year factoring in the pandemic.
Recently, India’s second largest IT company Infosys, which has a large presence in China has indicated an impact of $8-10 million (0.3 percent of quarterly growth) due to lost billings in China, though presence in Italy is small in the upcoming Q4 results.
While, many others have been reassessing their guidance for the upcoming quarters following the extended lockdown in China and now India.
The lockdown has resulted in lower utilisation of workforce across critical and high security applications, apart from constraints on physical movement.
However, the fact that business is returning to normalcy in the region, albeit cautiously, is a positive for the sector.
Tech Mahindra, the Information technology services major, has been present in China for over 15 years and involved in over 2,000 projects.
Currently, it had suspended operations in Wuhan due to the lockdown but was functioning in other regions of China.
Prior to the lifting of the lockdown in Wuhan, MD & CEO, Tech Mahindra, C.P Gurnani said, “The centres in Shanghai and Beijing were operational. We are constantly monitoring the situation and are working in accordance with the government’s orders and guidelines,”.
The companies like Infosys and HCL Technologies have guided for a double-digit growth in revenues in FY20, market leader Tata Consultancy Services is expected to post high single digit revenue growth.
On the other hand, Wipro is also expected to improve its performance in the fourth quarter results to be announced on 15 April.
Phishing is the most common method for scamsters to illegally siphon money from people. In simple terms, phishing is a method of scamming people by sending them emails pretending to be from reputable companies in order to get people to reveal their confidential information, such as passwords and credit card numbers.
A report has revealed that Apple is the most commonly impersonated brand name in phishing scams, followed by the leading OTT channel Netflix.
Apple Is The Most Chosen Brand For Phishing, Followed By Netflix, Yahoo, Whatsapp
A report by a cybersecurity firm, Check Point Research, has shown that Apple is the most chosen brand name for phishing scams in Quarter 1 of 2020. The other popular brands that people used for phishing were Netflix, Yahoo, and WhatsApp.
Additionally, the web is the most popular platform for cybercriminals, making up for 59% of the total. This is followed by mobile and cell phones, contributing to 23% of the phishing attacks.
Maya Horowitz, Director, Threat Intelligence & Research, Products at Check Point said that the threat of phishing will be growing in the coming months, especially now more than ever. The reason behind this is that scammers will continue to exploit the fears and needs of people using essential services from their homes. She has also encouraged users to be vigilant and cautious while sharing any personal and confidential information with anyone.
Horowitz said, “Cybercriminals continue to exploit users by adopting highly sophisticated phishing attempts via emails, web and mobile applications purporting to be from well-recognized brands which they know will be in high demand at the moment, whether that’s a high profile product launch or just generally tapping into behavioral changes we’ve seen during the coronavirus pandemic.”

Tata Nexon EV has been the most sold car, leaving behind the other electric vehicles, such as the MG ZS EV, Hyundai Kona EV. The company sold about 198 Nexon EVs in March, despite the whole lockdown situation created by the Coronavirus outbreak.
Whereas, MG Motors sold about 116 units of the ZS EV, which is much more expensive and bigger than Tata Nexon EV. About the Hyundai Kona EV, the company has sold units in limited numbers that haven’t been revealed yet. Hyundai Kona EV is the car with the highest range right now. There’s a possibility that the Kona sold as much as or fewer units compared to that of the ZS.
Tata Nexon is also the most accessible car of the lot that is on sale now. Also, it is locally manufactured in the company’s plant located in Pune.
However, the current situation is quite grave, and manufacturers have reported a decline in the sales of cars by up to 70 percent, especially in mainstream cases. Factories have been shut down, and showrooms are also functioning digitally. Also, dealers are registering online bookings of cars and assuring the delivery of cars to the customers only after the lockdown ends.

India’s coronavirus disease contact-tracing app Aarogya Setu became the world’s fastest growing mobile app on Tuesday night with 50 million users in 13 days.
It is to be highlighted that 11 million of these downloads were registered in a single day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged people to download the application in his third televised address to the nation, according to the Niti Aayog team lead.
The downloads surged from 39 million to a peak of 100,000 per minute on Tuesday morning following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 10 am address.
By midnight, 50 million people had downloaded the mobile app launched on April 2 to alert users who are at risk of exposure to Covid-19 infection over the past two weeks.
Aarogya Setu Shares Safe Behavioural Advises
Apart from reaching out and informing users about their potential risk of infection, the app also shares safe behaviours and updated medical advisories about the virus containment in 11 regional languages.
All these apps convert personal and location data into a random anonymous device identification that is saved for two weeks in your phone and the phones of other users within bluetooth range. That usually comes to around 10 metres for most smartphones.
The data is uploaded on the server and shared with health authorities only when either the user tests positive or is at high risk of infection. It then alerts all other users in the contact chain.
Apart from performing these activities, he app also has a dedicated a chatbot that asks you a series of questions to determine if you have any symptoms of Covid-19.
How Does it Work?
This app will help track the coronavirus infection by using the smartphone’s GPS system and Bluetooth and provide information that will help in determining if you have been near a Covid-19 infected person or not.
The application determines if you are at risk by scanning through a database of known cases across India, and also via location.
Also, since data encryption is a ‘must’ parameter, the app uses your location to know your area and check if you are around infected areas of the database and also needs an activated Bluetooth to determine if you have been within six feet from the infected person.
It gives each user a unique anonymous device identification on registration. The linking of the device identification to a mobile number is a one-time process and is then encrypted and secured in a server.
All future interactions from device to server are done through encrypted device identification detail and no personal information is exchanged after the one-time registration.
The information of all unique interactions is stored only for 30 days on the device, after which all data is deleted. The data for non-risk users is deleted from the server in 45 days, and for at-risk patients, it is wiped in 60 days.
India’s leading IT firm Wipro has said that firing employees can be considered in the coming days, in order to save costs.
Employees can be asked to go on unpaid leaves as well.
However, the silver lining is that, hiring won’t be stopped.
Wipro: Business Hit Due To Coronavirus
Wipro declared their 4th quarter earnings, and not surprisingly, their forecast is low due to the coronavirus impact.
While speaking with CNBC after the announcement of their results, CFO Jatin Dalal and President & Chief Human Resources Organisation (CHRO) Saurabh Govil said that the company is looking at ways to bring down the costs.
Within 15 days, Wipro has experienced a dip of 0.7% to 0.8% in business.
Dalal said, “There are many indications to show that the pandemic is worse than the global financial meltdown. In 15 days alone, due to just the discontinued operations, we have seen a 0.7-0.8% hit to the business”.
Due to this, they need to bring down the costs, and there can be layoffs.
Wipro’s 4th quarter net profit has reduced by 6% to Rs 2345 crore, but revenues increased to Rs 15,296 crore, which is a marginal increase.
Wipro: We Need To Bring Down Costs; Layoffs Can Happen
As per Saurabh, the company is looking at various options to bring down the costs amidst the global recession, which has already started.
Enforcing their employees to go on unpaid leaves, and terminating employees cannot be ruled out.
Wipro is also looking keenly at their sub-contractors, and some major changes can be announced soon.
He said, “We will look at if people can go on furloughs and leaves. If sub-contractor costs can come down and if we can deploy people there. We will have to cut costs wherever possible. These are tough times and we may have to take tough decisions.”
Wipro Will Keep On Hiring
At the same time, Wipro has said that they will keep on the hiring spree, especially campus placements.
Govil said, “There is no reason why the company cant hire freshers this year, considering the long-term relationship with colleges but the decision on how many will be taken and when it will be done only after the impact on the company is more clear,”
As of now, 93% of Wipro’s employees are working from home.
